Using Python's mplfinance and matplotlib libraries to Generate Graphs for Options Trading

I’ve been working on some python code and the mplfinance, matplotlib, yfinance python libraries to generate the images below. Many of them I have covered called or cash covered puts in which I roll monthly.

There are a couple types of graphs. The first type are candlestick charts that have the RSI, MACD, and 50/200 Exponential Moving Averages. The second type is a line graph with the EMAs, but also have a yellow line drawn at the strike of my call or put. It’s a nice visualization for me and gives me a quick sense of where the trade is headed. I’d like to combine the 2 into one and move to a weekly, but also add a simple daily line graph to get a sense of the trading day.

Bitcoin’s wild ride from April 2024 to present. (Finviz)

I don't believe in putting all my eggs in one basket, but I do believe in some Bitcoin as an part of an overall portfolio strategy. Black Rock says your typical investor might consider putting 2% of total assets into Bitcoin. That means if you have a million dollar portfolio, consider taking $20,000 and buy Bitcoin or a Bitcoin ETF with $20,000. Perhaps current prices are a bit stretched, but it’s something to think about as we enter into a crypto friendly administration next week.

Jerry’s Option Trades (Dec-Jan)

Some of the options trades I’ve been in this cycle.

I wrote a Python program the track my options trades (with a little help from ChatGPT). How does it work? I manually store all the options data in a json file and load into the program that queries a free yahoo finance API for the stock prices.

Above are the remaining trades I have left. NVDA, VZ, and BSX were profitable and I was recently assigned XLE (but kept the full premium). Normally I go for 50% premium collected and then close. Citibank is in decent shape, but the rest I will probably end up buying. My plan is to hold them for a bit then sell calls against them once their 30 delta options are reasonably priced. I will most likely have to sell my Apple shares at less than market value and take in capital gains. I’m happy with the profit, but I always wished it would be more.

Next week I’ll begin selling February calls and puts.

If the past few weeks have taught us anything, it’s that volatility is always around the corner. How can we best structure our portfolios so they are resilient, and we don’t go off selling things just because we hear the word “recession” multiple times a day on CNBC? Below we’ll take a look at a few videos put together by Greg, and some of his overall views of the market. Hint: It’s not all doom and gloom - if you’re saving each pay period, you’re actually dollar cost averaging, and your dividend stocks are adding more shares at fire sale prices!

Lots of red for sure, however gold and agriculture are up 17% and 13% for the year and there are buying opportunities everywhere you look.

These are the Vanguard ETFs that show how various categories of the stock market have been trading since the beginning of the year. VUG (Large Cap Growth) is up 15% for the year. Maybe this won’t continue, but if you step back from day-to-day, you’ll see overall that things aren’t so bad as the media machine like to make them look.

One negative observation for SPY — we did break below the 50 day EMA (green line) on Friday. The next support level seems to be the red line (200 day) at 525.

Overall, most market sectors did poorly this week with the exception of Real Estate, Consumer Staples, and some Utilities.

The Fear and Greed Index, VIX

Hard to believe that one week ago we were in Greed (62) and this week we ended up in Fear (39). This is mainly because of the rising vix, and other metrics such as the put/call ratio. Source: CNN Fear and Greed Indicator

An elevated vix shows us the market is fearful, however we’re nowhere near the 40 handle we saw in August. Remember, Vix is mean-reverting which means that after it does it’s thing, it tends go back to where it was quickly. When the vix is elevated, it’s a good time for selling options.

Hot Trades - It’s Glowtime! Bullish Apple Cash Secured Put

At 10am PT on 9/9, Apple has another famous event, and all eyes will be on the iPhone 16 and the new iOS 18 which will provide us all with AI in our pockets (assuming you have the right model iPhone).

Usually Apple Events tend to make the stock go down, but I am bullish through the 15th of the month, so on 8/30 I sold a 215 PUT out to 9/20, collecting $130 in premium. Apple is currently trading for 220. If it is trading below 215 on 9/20 I will purchase 100 shares of Apple for $21,500.

Hope everyone had a great trading week and was not too affected by the Crowdstrike issues that brought down airlines, banks, and government agencies. We continue to see volatility increase as we get into the heart of earnings season, an upcoming US election, and other geopolitical events. Markets had a pullback this week and time will tell if it was a “healthy” one or the beginning of the complete deterioration of society (I kid!)

For trading, we go into our thesis for identifying good covered call candidates, and share our top trades in this area. (Premium HotTrades section).

Pullbacks in SPY, QQQ this past week while VIX up to a 16 handle.

Lately, I’ve enjoyed watching the YTD performance through the lens of market cap and stock type. As you can see Large Cap Growth is up 20% for the year, while mid cap and small caps are up a respective 6-8% in all stock categories.

Momentum Based Strategies: I’ve created my own Papa Bear Tracker that is fairly close to the source (see Avg column of 3,6,12 month performance). As of the end of last month, I’ve split my top investments into VUG, IAU, and VWO. Currently VWO is down to 5th place, and VIOG (small cap growth) is in back in 3rd. If it stays this way until 7/31, I’ll be swapping VWO and VIOG. As time goes on I’m finding myself pouring more into this strategy.

In terms of technical damage, SPY broke the 20 EMA (blue line), but is still trading comfortably above the 50 and 200 EMAs (green and red lines).

If you used a knife to make a cut from the upper right to the lower left, you’ll see generally that this past week was down for Tech and Communications, and positive for other areas such as Financials, Health Care, Industrials, Consumer Defense, and Energy.

The Fear and Greed Index, VIX

For all you Star Trek the Next Generation Fans 🖖, we’re hanging out in the Neutral Zone. This just means that we could be at a turning point.

Finally, a decent spike in the VIX this week. This means that option sellers will get more premium (and thereby take on more risk). Option buyers will spend more for their trades (but could also make more if they are correct in direction).

Earnings Next Week

Besides VZ earnings which I have a cash secured put in, there is Tesla and Alphabet on Tuesday after the close to keep an eye on. In addition to earnings, we have Existing Home Sales on 7/23, PMI on 7/24, and Initial Jobless Claims on 7/25.

Hot Trades - Bearish SPY Vertical, Cash Secured Puts and Covered Calls

On 7/11, I alerted traders that I bought to open a 559/560 bearish put spread for a $48 debit, then on 7/17, sold to close it for $58—a $10 profit. While not much money, it was fun to do a smaller timeframe (days) trade instead of my usual covered call and cash secured put trades which are over 1 or more months.

Happy 4th of July! The Money Vikings and their families took a cruise to see Glaciers in Alaska, whales swimming in the North Pacific, met musher dogs, lumberjacks, and saw bald eagles soaring over snowy mountain peaks. Our families have made many wonderful memories that will last a lifetime! We know these trips aren’t cheap, but sometimes it’s nice (and healthy) to take a step out of the rat race and celebrate life with those you love.

The market continues to ascend to all time highs, and volatility is low. 50% of stocks are above the 50 SMA, and 62% are above the 200 SMA. This is bullish, but keep an eye out for pullbacks, and have some cash ready to snap up any deals should you see any on your lists.

Commodities like Gold, Oil, and Agriculture are all doing quite well for the year. Are they a good place to hide?

The Fear and Greed Index, AAII & VIX

A serious drop in the Fear and Greed indicator. Just one week ago we were at 62 and now we’re almost below neutral and into Fear 😱

Slowly but surely, for the last 3 weeks, investors are moving from bullish to neutral. Bearishness increased 2% and this report doesn’t even take into account Friday’s drop. (https://www.aaii.com/sentiment-survey)

Is the vix determined to go back to last year’s mid-October highs around 21? Something to keep an eye on this week. Remember, as volatility rises, this pays more premium for traders selling options (think covered calls, iron condors, and cash secured puts!).

VZ Covered Call Update - on 4/9 My Verizon shares were called away. This means I kept the $46 premium as profit from the short call I sold 3 weeks ago, I also made profit from Verizon dividends, and short call premium over the past few years. I still have COPX and CARR covered calls open until Friday.

COPX Covered Call Update - my short call was for 4/19 at 43. Even though COPX has fallen this week, as long as it’s above 43 by close on Friday, I’ll also be selling COPX (for a profit) and keeping the entire premium ($86).

A reader wrote in and asked me what I thought about the Reddit IPO. I thought it was hard to tell, but with most IPOs I’ve participated in — I wished I hadn’t. Or at least waited much longer and bought at a cheaper price. This reader wanted to short it. I told them that one can’t short (with options) until there’s an options market for it. And if I were to short it, I’d only do it with the “max loss” low risk options (i.e. buying puts) for a debit. If you sell calls against it and it goes up, then you become Melvin Capital in GameStop, and take on infinite risk exposure.

This market continues to surprise, twist and turn. QQQ is already up 3.78% for the year no doubt boosted by the Apple Vision Pro launch. SPY is following close behind at 2.18% up, hitting all time highs this week that were set initially at the beginning of 2022.

The Millionaire Next Door which came out probably 25 plus years ago now which is kind of surprising since I first had a copy when I was maybe about 20 years old and it definitely shaped my perception of what it takes to to build wealth in the US.

I wanted to revisit some of these ideas, in 2024. I hope you're off to a good year in terms of all those micro-habits (those small steps every day that we talk about that really build a life of true wealth and more). I believe that that’s the answer — it's really about the small things that you can do every day to build wealth and to build your health and to build your relationships. The Fear and Greed Index & Market Temperature

We continue to stay in Extreme Greed territory, but down about 2 points from the prior week. The AAII Survey reached the highest bullish levels in 2 and a half years last week, but retreated 13% to 46% bullish, down from 59%. Bearishness increased 5% to 25% and the remainder of the investors were 2% more neutral than they were the prior week.

Money Vikings Investing - 🎅Week of 12/25/2023 - Stocks Unwrap Gains in Positive Pre-Holiday Week

Although the Wednesday SPY drop to 467 was a bit scary, Wall Street donned its 🎅 Santa hat for the week of December 18th, as all major indices enjoyed a jolly climb. After a shaky start, hopes for a dovish Fed and positive earnings reports sent investors into a festive buying spree. And what’s more? There’s still room before hitting the 477.98 upper bollinger band :) Just keep an eye on the overbought RSI of 68.93.

The S&P 500 led the charge, gaining 0.86%, closing at a shiny 4,754.83. The tech-heavy Nasdaq wasn't far behind, surging 1.32% to reach a high of 15,069. The Dow Jones also joined the party, adding 0.51% to end the week at a cozy 37,385. Even the often-grumpy Russell 2000 managed a 1.78% gain, bringing it to 2,034.33. GLD is also about a dollar away from recent highs of 192.40 this week.

Several factors fueled the market's holiday cheer:

Dovish Whispers: The pivot from the Fed sparked hope for slower interest rate hikes in the new year, sending growth-oriented sectors like tech soaring.
Inflation Iceberg Melting: Data suggesting easing inflation sprinkled some peppermint candy on investor enthusiasm, further supporting a dovish Fed.

Welcome to the last month of 2023! What a nice November we’ve had, other than the passing of Charlie Munger. Hoping the Santa Clause Rally continues to make up for the ugly October. We have a low vix, SPY is flirting with 460, and the AAII positive sentiment is at very high levels, while bearish sentiment is at 6 year lows. What could go wrong 😂? Hope you saw Greg’s article on Why he’s buying O hand over fist from a few weeks back, you would have made a fortune 🚀!

We have 2 trades to finish this year - a bullish put spread, and a neutral iron condor. In the Hot Trades section for premium member we closed the TLT spread, and the SPY Iron Condor has been rolled once. We do need a pullback for break even or profit. I’m keeping the trade open a few more weeks to see what happens, but I wouldn’t blame any members for closing. Hope you have a wonderful week!
